Songwriters Hall of Fame Member Mark James Passes Away at 83

Grammy-winning songwriter and Songwriters Hall of Fame member Mark James has passed away at the age of 83. Known for penning iconic songs such as Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds,” Willie Nelson’s “Always on My Mind,” and B.J. Thomas’ “Hooked on a Feeling,” James leaves behind a lasting legacy in the music industry.

Born Francis Zambon in Houston, Texas, James began his music career in the late 1950s and eventually formed The Mark James Trio. After serving in Vietnam, he moved to Memphis where he found success as a songwriter, collaborating with artists like B.J. Thomas and penning hits like “The Eyes of a New York Woman” and “Hooked on a Feeling.”

One of James’ most famous compositions, “Suspicious Minds,” became a chart-topping hit for Elvis Presley in 1969 and has since been recognized as one of the greatest songs of all time. His songwriting prowess also earned him two Grammy Awards in 1983 for “Always on My Mind,” a song recorded by Willie Nelson.

Throughout his career, James wrote over 200 songs and was honored with inductions into multiple songwriters’ halls of fame. He is survived by his wife, Karen, his daughters, Sammie and Dana, and his grandchildren.

James’ family described him as a captivating storyteller with a zest for life, whose music will continue to resonate with generations of music lovers. His contributions to the music industry will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
