WNBA Rookie Angel Reese Becomes Owner of DC Power Football Club
WNBA rookie and former college basketball star Angel Reese has added a new title to her resume – professional sports owner. Reese is now the newest owner of DC Power Football Club, a new women’s soccer team based in Washington, D.C. that will begin play in the USL Super League this summer.
The announcement was made by the team on Tuesday, revealing that Reese will join the team’s current ownership group which includes Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, as well as community and business leaders from the DMV area.
In a statement, Reese expressed her excitement about the opportunity to support women’s sports and invest in women’s soccer in the DMV community. As a native of Randallstown, Md., Reese has deep ties to the D.C. area and hopes to establish new pathways for aspiring pro athletes through her ownership of Power FC.
Reese, who is also a star member of the WNBA’s rookie class playing for the Chicago Sky, brings a unique perspective and reach to the club as their first celebrity owner. With major partnerships with brands like Reebok, Beats, and Tampax, Reese is already a force in the sports business landscape at just 22 years old.
The announcement of Reese’s ownership stake in DC Power comes as the club unveils its name, logo, and appoints its inaugural president and coach. The team will play in Audi Field, sharing the stadium with D.C. United and the NWSL’s Washington Spirit.
Reese’s decision to become a founding investor in Power FC has been hailed as groundbreaking by Jason Levien, D.C. United CEO and co-chairman, who looks forward to her partnership in the boardroom as an equity partner.
The USL Super League is set to begin play in August, and with Reese on board, DC Power is poised to make a significant impact on women’s sports in the DMV area and beyond.
