Washington Wizards Celebrate Black History Month with Benjamin Banneker Legacy Event

The Washington Wizards are celebrating Black History Month in a unique and impactful way with their campaign “Not Bound by One Month”. As part of this initiative, the team will be recognizing the achievements and influence of individuals and organizations from the DMV area, with a special focus on the lasting impact of Benjamin Banneker.

On Monday, February 26, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School will host an assembly to honor Banneker’s legacy. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the renowned scientist, mathematician, astronomer, and writer from Rachel Jamison Webster, a collateral descendant of Banneker. Webster, who authored “Benjamin Banneker and Us: Eleven Generations of an American Family”, will share the story of Banneker’s remarkable life and contributions.

Joining Webster at the event will be Banneker’s collateral descendants, Edie Lee Harris and Robert Lett, who have worked tirelessly to preserve and share the family’s history. Wizards Senior Vice President of Monumental Basketball, John Thompson III, will also be in attendance to show his support for this important celebration.

The assembly will be a unique opportunity for students to connect with the legacy of Benjamin Banneker and learn about his significant contributions to the District of Columbia. It promises to be an inspiring and educational event that highlights the importance of honoring and celebrating Black history throughout the year.
