WUSA9 Partners with Local Organizations to Combat Food Insecurity During the Holidays
As the holiday season approaches, organizations in the DMV area are gearing up to help those in need. On Nov. 4, WUSA9 will be teaming up with local organizations such as Bread for the City, UCAP, Manna Food Center, and Arlington Food Assistance Center to host food drives to combat food insecurity in the community.
This initiative is part of WUSA9’s #GivingMatters campaign, which aims to alleviate food insecurity in the DMV area. Over the summer, WUSA9 partnered with eight organizations and collected over 16,000 pounds of food for individuals and families in need.
The “Stuff-the-Truck” food drive locations include Bread for the City at the Giant Food Store on Park Road in Washington, D.C., as well as Manna Food Center at the Giant Food Store in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Additionally, AFAC has provided a list of items needed for their food drive on their website.
According to a report by The Capital Area Food Bank, one out of three people in the D.C. region experienced food insecurity last year. Prince George’s County was identified as having the highest level of food insecurity in the DMV, followed by Prince William County, Virginia, and D.C.
Food insecurity is a significant issue in the DMV, with the USDA defining it as experiencing reduced quality, variety, or desirability of diet. WUSA9 is working with local organizations to provide relief to children and families facing food insecurity during the holidays.
