Exciting College Hockey Double Header Coming to Washington, D.C. in December
The nation’s capital is set to host a historic event this winter as Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) announced the inaugural Capital Hockey Classic. This exciting college hockey double header will take place at Capital One Arena on December 12, featuring Army, Navy, and Penn State.
The event will kick off with a game between Army and Navy’s club hockey teams, followed by a matchup between Army and Penn State’s Division I programs. This celebration of hockey talent from two United States military academies and a Big Ten powerhouse will take place just days before the iconic Army-Navy rivalry football game at Commanders Field on December 14.
“We are ecstatic to be able to welcome college hockey back to Capital One Arena,” said Jim Van Stone, President of Business Operations and Chief Commercial Officer at MSE. “It is an honor to host this college hockey showcase ahead of the Army-Navy football game, giving fans a chance to witness this storied rivalry on the ice and then see two top Division I teams match up against each other.”
Capital One Arena, home to the NHL’s Washington Capitals, previously hosted the 2009 NCAA Frozen Four and continues to be a hub for hockey in the D.C. area. Game times, ticketing information, and additional details about the Capital Hockey Classic will be available in the coming months on capitalonearena.com.
Both Army and Penn State have rich hockey traditions, with Army’s program dating back to 1904 and Penn State elevating to Division I status in 2012. The two teams have a history of competitive matchups, with Penn State holding a 4-0-0 record against Army in recent years.
Navy Club Hockey, coached by Kevin Rooney, competes in Division 1 of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) and has had recent success in the ECHA Championship and ACHA National Tournament.
This event promises to be a thrilling showcase of college hockey talent in the heart of Washington, D.C. as fans gear up for a weekend of intense competition and historic rivalries on the ice.
