Increased Law Enforcement Presence at DMV Area Airports in Response to Capitol Riots and Inauguration Threats

The aftermath of the riots at the Capitol on Jan. 6 continues to reverberate throughout Washington D.C., with security measures being ramped up across the city. In addition to increased law enforcement presence in the District, travelers passing through the three DMV area airports can expect to see heightened security measures in place.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, and Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport will all have an increased law enforcement presence leading up to next week’s presidential inauguration. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has confirmed that both airports are operating normally, but passengers should be prepared to encounter additional security measures.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has also announced enhanced security protocols at the airports, including additional law enforcement and canine presence. TSA will be utilizing advanced screening technologies to detect prohibited items and ensure the safety of travelers.

Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf has initiated special security operations for the 2021 inauguration, with the U.S. Secret Service taking the lead. U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer has called for individuals involved in the Capitol riots to be added to the TSA No-Fly list, emphasizing the importance of preventing potential threats to national security.

In response to the recent events, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has updated its rules regarding unruly passengers. Those who engage in threatening or disruptive behavior towards crew members could face immediate removal from flights and hefty fines.

As the nation prepares for the upcoming presidential inauguration, authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and security of all travelers passing through the DMV area airports.
