Maryland Advocates for ‘Fair Competition’ to Retain Team

Washington Commanders Ownership and the Battle for a New Stadium: Maryland’s Stance

The Washington Commanders are undergoing a significant transformation under new ownership led by managing partner Josh Harris. With just a few finishing touches left to complete the facelift, one crucial decision remains – finding the team a new home to play in.

The battle to host the site of the Commanders’ new home is heating up between the city of D.C., the state of Maryland, and the commonwealth of Virginia. Each location is vying to become the team’s new home, with Maryland officials recently speaking out about their desire to keep the Commanders in Landover.

Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland emphasized the importance of binding agreements regarding the future of the current stadium property should the Commanders decide to move. Maryland is seeking fair competition in the bid to host the team, but faces challenges from D.C. and Virginia in the race to secure the Commanders’ future home.

The potential return of the Commanders to D.C., specifically to the old RFK Stadium site, hinges on the passage of a bill granting long-term control of the land to the city. If successful, this move could cut Maryland out of the housing race altogether, as Virginia already hosts the team’s headquarters in Ashburn.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the team’s future location, Harris has expressed openness to the idea of not consolidating all operations in one site or jurisdiction. Maryland is determined to put up a fight to keep the Commanders in Landover, ensuring that the state is not left with a vacant plot of land if the team decides to relocate.

As the Commanders navigate this pivotal decision, fans eagerly await the outcome, with many hoping for a return to D.C. or a new stadium in Virginia. The future home of the Washington Commanders remains uncertain, but one thing is clear – the team’s new ownership is committed to making the best decision for the franchise and its loyal fan base.
