Record-breaking heatwave hits the DMV area

D.C. Bracing for Notable Heat Wave with 90s Expected Through the Weekend

Get ready, Washington D.C., because a significant heat wave is on the horizon. With temperatures expected to reach the low 90s starting Monday and continuing through the weekend, this could mark one of the most notable heat waves the city has experienced in recent years.

According to meteorologists, a heat wave is defined as three or more consecutive days with highs of at least 90 degrees. The last time D.C. saw a heat wave of this magnitude was back in 2022, with an 8-day stretch of high temperatures. However, the city hasn’t experienced triple-digit heat in nearly eight years, with the hottest temperature last year only reaching 99 degrees.

June is typically the third hottest month in D.C., with an average of 7 to 8 days in the 90s. The combination of high temperatures and increasing humidity levels could push the heat index above triple digits, making it feel even hotter than it actually is.

Heat waves are common in the nation’s capital during the summer months, thanks to a semi-permanent area of high pressure off the southeast coast known as the “Bermuda High.” This weather pattern brings hot and humid air northward from the deep south into the Mid-Atlantic region.

As D.C. residents prepare for the upcoming heat wave, it’s important to stay cool and hydrated. Remember to check on vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and young children, and take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Stay tuned to the latest weather updates and follow tips for staying safe during extreme heat conditions.
