Celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month: AJC’s Library Campaign in the DMV Area

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) made a significant impact during Jewish American Heritage Month by launching a month-long campaign to spread knowledge about Judaism and Jewish people. This initiative involved book and window displays at 24 libraries in the DMV area, along with two book events featuring Jewish authors.

The campaign aimed to combat rising antisemitism and highlight the positive contributions of Jews throughout American history. Sue Stolov, the AJC Regional Task Force on Antisemitism chair, emphasized the importance of educating the public about Jewish American heritage. The libraries served as a perfect platform to reach a diverse audience and promote understanding.

Through months of outreach and collaboration with library staff, AJC members and volunteers successfully curated booklists, articles, and poster templates for the displays. The program not only showcased books about the Holocaust and antisemitism but also highlighted the achievements of 150 Jewish Americans who have made significant contributions to the United States.

The events featuring authors Erica Perl and Michael Sokolove provided additional insights and perspectives on Jewish culture and creativity. Attendees were captivated by the authors’ personal stories and experiences, further enriching their understanding of Jewish heritage.

As the month concluded with Sokolove’s event, AJC’s efforts to raise awareness about antisemitism and celebrate Jewish culture continue. The positive reception from both Jewish and non-Jewish attendees, as well as the support from librarians, indicates a growing interest in learning about Jewish history and traditions.

AJC Regional Director Alan Ronkin emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating Jewish contributions to society. By promoting a deeper understanding of Jewish culture, the community can foster a sense of pride and appreciation for the diverse and impactful heritage of the Jewish community.

Overall, the AJC’s campaign during Jewish American Heritage Month successfully promoted education, awareness, and appreciation for Jewish culture, contributing to the ongoing efforts to combat antisemitism and promote inclusivity and understanding in the community.
