Israeli Minister Benny Gantz Resigns from Emergency Government, Citing Lack of Plan for Gaza “Day After”

Centrist Israeli Minister Benny Gantz Resigns from Emergency Government Over Lack of Gaza Plan

In a shocking move, centrist Israeli minister Benny Gantz announced his resignation from the emergency government on Sunday, citing a lack of a plan from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the “day after” in Gaza. Gantz, a former military chief and the top political rival of Netanyahu, made the announcement during a televised news conference, stating that Netanyahu’s failure to provide a clear strategy for the future led to his decision to step down.

Gantz’s resignation, which also includes his State Party and the seats it held in the Knesset, is seen as a major blow to Netanyahu’s coalition government. Despite this setback, Netanyahu’s government will still retain a majority in the Knesset.

During his announcement, Gantz called on Netanyahu to set a date for elections, emphasizing the need for a new direction in Israeli leadership. He had initially planned to make the announcement on Saturday but postponed it due to news of an Israel Defense Forces operation in Gaza that resulted in the rescue of four Israeli hostages.

Netanyahu, in response to Gantz’s resignation, urged him to reconsider his decision, emphasizing the importance of unity in the face of ongoing challenges. The prime minister stated that Israel is currently engaged in an “existential war on several fronts” and called for all Zionist parties to come together in pursuit of victory.

Gantz had previously issued an ultimatum to Netanyahu, threatening to resign if a post-war plan was not approved by June 8. He criticized the prime minister for his handling of the conflict, stating that while Israeli soldiers displayed bravery on the front lines, some leaders showed “cowardice and irresponsibility.”

As the political landscape in Israel continues to evolve, the resignation of Benny Gantz marks a significant development in the ongoing tensions within the government. The future of Israeli leadership remains uncertain as the country grapples with internal divisions and external threats.
